Honors 222: Brave New World
The Scientific, Economic and Social Impact of Computer Science
Professor Anna R. Karlin
Spring 2010 Taking a class about Computer Science was completely out of my comfort level, and not something I had ever done. It turned out to be one of the most interesting classes I took at UW, and gave me an essential understanding of the basics of computing, programming, and the incredible ways in which computers are changing every aspect of our lives. My final project was a blog post to our class website that took the form of a conversational research paper/personal essay. Using my own Facebook and cellphone habits as illustration, I investigated how new forms of communication changed (or not) our habits of interaction. The challenge of this essay was to write about scientific concepts in a conversational and humorous way and integrate published research on the topic with my observations and analysis of my own habits. |
